Jawara Pallassa

Eshu Kinain
Sailor of the
Cyclone

Description

~It's difficult to tell what ethnicity that Jawara Pallassa may be. Is he black? Asian? Indian? Well, he's good-looking regardless: a mocha-skinned blending of exotic flavors. This tall cup of water is still waxing his twenties, and Jawara shows it with the casual street attire he favors. Jeans and a sports brand t-shirt or sweatshirt are most common. Jawara tends to keep his round head shaven bald or close to it, drawing emphasis to his luminous brown eyes. In those eyes one can see a distant starriness: Jawara's hopes to see the world before he dies. The wizened and even timeless etches of Jawara's face suggests he's already seen a good bit. Strange and unstill energy surrounds the man, displaying his eagerness and vigor. Jawara is always a whirl with a mysterious air, as if all the lore of the world was housed in this young man's wayward soul.~

History

Orphan Boy

Jawara Pallassa’s family since 1983 was Sister Elizabeth’s Sanctuary for Children in Brighton, England. The unusual mix of Chinese and Algerian never knew his parents or if he had siblings. The young boy never enjoyed it there. He always railed against the strict rules, ignoring as many as possible (especially curfews). At least the place wasn’t abusive!

Of course, he and the other orphans were raised with traditional British “standards of morality”. He was obliged to go to church and a boarding house-style school. And to better prepare their youths for adulthood, the nuns and teachers at the sanctuary schooled Jawara in a wide variety of common skills and general crafts. But they couldn’t take away Jawara’s free will though. He rejected religion, though proved to be an avid (if undisciplined) student of academics and crafts. And he had ample friends among his fellow orphans.

As Jawara grew into his adolescence, he snuck out of the orphanage regularly at night. He snuck into town and chased girls, easily making friends with other local teens. He had a dreamy air and exotic flair. But then his weird, reckless, and offbeat tempo as quickly lost those friends. His eyes particularly freaked some of his peers out.

Stowaway

That was partly why Jawara ran away when he barely turned fifteen. He ended up in London, begging and stealing just to get by, and learning valuable street survival skills. But Jawara also learned how to take care of himself from a local Chinese restaurant owner who was also a skilled teacher of kung fu. Han Fu took pity on young Jawara, especially due to the orphan runaway’s mixed ethnicity. Jawara proved to be an eager and astute student of kung fu, working hard to learn and serving his sifu faithfully. But even this attachment wasn’t enough to keep Jawara and he often had to dodge bobbies (police).

Run-ins with the law led Jawara to flee again. This time he stole onto a merchant vessel, a large trans-oceanic freighter, the North Star. He hid among the cargo and managed to avoid capture until the ship was halfway across the Atlantic. Captain Varn Bellfield was annoyed! He put Jawara to work…hard work. But he was secretly intrigued by Jawara’s strangeness. For his part, Jawara loved seeing the world and all its oceans (missing only the Arctic by the end of his journey).

At least the boy proved to be an able sailor. Jawara proved more than that in 2003. When in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of East Africa, the North Star came under attack by pirates! Their speedboats and heavy weapons hijacked the boat, but when they boarded, Jawara unleashed a fearless one-man counterattack. Using the kung fu and related weapons Master Han taught him, Jawara stomped the pirates one at a time. No one attacked his ship!

Caribbean Nights

However, when the North Star reached the Caribbean Sea in early 2005, Jawara’s urge for a change of speed struck again. His crewmates and Captain Varn were sad to see their hero go. In Kingston, Jamaica, Jawara waved good-bye to his first crew. For the next few months, the Eshu Kinain enjoyed hot and often wild nights in the tropics. He frequently island-hopped, unknowingly evading the fae pirates based out of the region. Jawara’s island-hopping ended when he reached New Orleans post-Katrina. Little did he know that his luck had run out as far as avoiding the faerie pirates of the Caribbean was concerned. Nor did Jawara realize he was about to turn pirate himself…

Significant Other

Jawara encountered Lady Brigita Bikinaite in New Orleans back in late 2005, just after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Big Easy. At first, the Varich Sidhe thought he was a looter, and prepared to dispatch Jawara out of disgust even Unseelie would feel. Then she noticed his Kinain heritage. He wasn't looting anyway, he was salvaging: many houses left behind had treasures of Glamour that would be lost to the floods and mold. The two traded tales and explored the ruins of the city. Having only each other in this otherwise strange and broken city, the pair soon hooked up. Their tryst, however, is aloof passion: wanton and brazen. Brigita cannot know true love, and Jawara doesn't care enough to want it.

Weakness
Vagrant Fists

Jawara wanders like the wind. He searches for "glory and gold", and he's unafraid to hurt people to get it. But while he makes an admirable pirate, he's small fry in a big world. Even with his fey friends, he's out of his league, and the majors will come kick him off the playing field one of these days.

Likelihood of Corruption

Average.

While his strong faerie blood can draw the wrong kind of attention, it also draws a lot of good attention. Namely, other fae who want to protect the likes of this Kinain keep close. Meanwhile, Jawara is too independent to agree to witting service to any forces of corruption: he's Unseelie in nature but no Shadow Courtier. But his disinterest also makes him ignorant to more subtle threats and coercion.
